About this guide
This page is for the admin whose legal team asks whether OpenAI trains its models on what staff type into ChatGPT. It quotes OpenAI's own help pages and says which accounts each statement covers. It does not replace your agreement with OpenAI.
DefaultWhat OpenAI says about business data
OpenAI's data-sharing page says: "By default, we don’t use any inputs or outputs from our products for business users, including ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the API, to improve our models."
OpenAI's apps admin page says the same default covers workspace content, including information accessed through apps, for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu. For current terms and any opt-ins it points to OpenAI's Enterprise Privacy page, so read that page live and record the date.
AccountsPersonal accounts are a different answer
OpenAI's connected apps page says that for ChatGPT Free, Plus, Go and Pro users, OpenAI may use information accessed from apps to train its models if the "Improve the model for everyone" setting is on.
So the default above is a reason to move work use into the company workspace. An employee using a personal Plus account for work is not covered by the business default.
LimitsTraining is not retention, and apps have their own terms
OpenAI's apps admin page says information included in chats or research outputs follows the applicable conversation, feature and workspace-retention policies. Whether data is kept is a separate question from whether it is used for training.
Data shared with a third-party app is handled under that app's terms of service and privacy policies, which OpenAI says you see before enabling the app. Review them as part of approving the app.

Train the admins, then the people they support
This page covers one admin task. The Nightschool AI admin and governance course walks the whole setup of OpenAI's ChatGPT Business and Enterprise in order: plan differences, data use, domain verification and SSO, provisioning and roles, apps, audit logs and the Compliance Platform, and retention, residency and HIPAA, with every step checked against OpenAI's own documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does OpenAI train on ChatGPT Enterprise chats?
By default, no. OpenAI's data-sharing page says it does not use inputs or outputs from business users, including ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise, to improve its models.
Does that include ChatGPT Business?
Yes. OpenAI names ChatGPT Business in the same sentence as ChatGPT Enterprise and the API.
What about data from Google Drive or other apps?
OpenAI's apps admin page says Business, Enterprise and Edu workspace content, including information accessed through apps, is not used to train its models by default.
Are personal Plus accounts the same?
No. OpenAI says app information may be used for training on Free, Plus, Go and Pro if the "Improve the model for everyone" setting is on.
Can a workspace admin read members' chats?
OpenAI says Business administrators do not automatically gain access to members' ordinary private conversations. Enterprise and Edu records go through the Compliance Platform.
Does this make our use compliant?
No page does that on its own. This is what OpenAI states; your legal team decides what your obligations require.
