About this guide

This page is for the IT or procurement admin asked whether ChatGPT Business is enough or the company needs ChatGPT Enterprise. It lists the admin differences OpenAI states on its own help pages. It does not quote prices, because they change; read them on OpenAI's pages.

Identity

Sign-in and directory sync

OpenAI's Business SSO page says SSO and domain verification are included with ChatGPT Business, and that Business supports SAML and OpenID Connect. If all you need is company sign-in through your identity provider, Business covers it.

Directory sync is different. OpenAI's SCIM page says a standalone ChatGPT Business plan does not include SCIM. Workspace-level SCIM is listed for eligible Enterprise or Edu workspaces, and tenant-wide SCIM needs an eligible Enterprise or Edu workspace, Ads account, or ChatGPT for Teachers district tenant.

Groups follow the same line. OpenAI's Admin Console page says Business does not support custom workspace groups.

Controls

Roles, apps and records

OpenAI's RBAC page says role-based access control is available for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Teachers. Business is not on that list, so per-team feature rules point to Enterprise.

App defaults are opposite. OpenAI's apps admin page says apps are enabled by default in ChatGPT Business, while in Enterprise and Edu new plugins and apps are generally disabled by default. A Business admin starts by switching off what is not approved; an Enterprise admin starts by switching on what is.

For records, OpenAI says the Compliance Platform is available only to eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces, and that Business administrators do not automatically gain access to members' ordinary private conversations.

Train the admins, then the people they support

This page covers one admin task. The Nightschool AI admin and governance course walks the whole setup of OpenAI's ChatGPT Business and Enterprise in order: plan differences, data use, domain verification and SSO, provisioning and roles, apps, audit logs and the Compliance Platform, and retention, residency and HIPAA, with every step checked against OpenAI's own documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT Business include SSO?

Yes. OpenAI's Business SSO page says SSO and domain verification are included with ChatGPT Business, with SAML and OpenID Connect supported.

Does ChatGPT Business include SCIM?

No. OpenAI's SCIM page says a standalone ChatGPT Business plan does not include SCIM, synchronized groups or automatic directory provisioning.

Can ChatGPT Business use custom roles?

OpenAI's RBAC page lists role-based access control for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and Teachers. Business is not on that list.

Which plans have the Compliance Platform?

OpenAI says it is available only to eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces, subject to configuration and the administrator's permissions.

Are apps on by default?

In ChatGPT Business, yes. In Enterprise and Edu, OpenAI says new plugins and apps are generally disabled by default, and admins choose what to enable.

Where are the prices?

On OpenAI's own pages. This page does not quote them, because prices change and a copied price in a policy document goes stale.
