Your Own AI Agent, On A Budget
Can You Run Your Own AI Agent for About US$10 a Month?
A free agent, a free server, and a model you pay for by the month or by the token.
Yes, you can run your own AI agent for about US$10 a month: Nous Research's Hermes Agent is free and open source, Oracle Cloud's free tier gives you a free server for an AI agent, and the model is the only bill: a flat US$10 a month plan or DeepSeek's API by the token. The US$10 is our estimate.

Key Takeaways
- Nous Research's Hermes Agent is free and open source under the MIT license, and works with any OpenAI-compatible model API, DeepSeek included.
- Oracle Cloud's free tier includes Arm compute equal to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory, 200 GB of block storage and 10 TB of outbound data a month.
- The model is the bill: OpenCode's Go plan is US$10 a month, or DeepSeek's deepseek-flash API runs US$0.30 per 1M input tokens at peak and US$0.15 off-peak.
- The recommended path is hybrid: the low-cost model does the work, and a stronger model such as Anthropic's Claude checks anything before you use or send it.
- DeepSeek's privacy policy says it stores your data in the People's Republic of China, so never send client, customer or company-confidential data to this setup.

About this guide
A popular setup this week pairs Nous Research's open-source Hermes Agent with a low-cost model and a free cloud server, then has a stronger model such as Anthropic's Claude check the work. It holds up, as long as you know where the money and your data go.
What each piece costs, as of November 5, 2026
| What you get | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Agent: Nous Research's Hermes Agent | Open-source agent you install yourself; chat with it from Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal and more | Free (MIT license) |
| Server: Oracle Cloud free tier | Arm compute equal to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory, 200 GB of block storage, 10 TB outbound data a month | Free; sign-up asks for a credit or debit card to verify you |
| Model, flat: OpenCode's Go plan | Curated low-cost models; OpenCode says it has validated Hermes with it | US$10 a month |
| Model, by the token: DeepSeek's deepseek-flash API | Input US$0.30 per 1M (peak), US$0.15 (off-peak); cached input US$0.006 / US$0.003; output US$1.20 / US$0.60 | Pay as you go |
| Data location | DeepSeek: processed and stored in the People's Republic of China, per its privacy policy | Check before you send anything |
The Three PiecesWhat a budget AI agent is made of
Running your own AI agent for about US$10 a month means paying only for the model. The agent and the server are free.
The agent
Nous Research's Hermes Agent is the program that plans steps, uses tools and remembers context. It installs with one command on Linux, macOS or WSL2, and there is a desktop app for macOS and Windows.
The server
Oracle Cloud's free tier gives you a small always-on machine, so the agent keeps running when your laptop is closed.
The model
A low-cost model does the thinking: a flat plan such as OpenCode's US$10 Go plan, or DeepSeek's API billed by the token.
The Main PathHybrid: a cheap model works, a stronger model checks
A low-cost model is fine for drafts, lookups and routine steps, and more likely to get things wrong than a top model. So don't trust it alone: have a stronger model, such as Anthropic's Claude on the plan you already use, read anything that matters before you use it or send it.
Hermes Agent supports this directly. Nous Research's docs show how to pin a different model for the subagents it delegates to, and how to set backup providers it falls back to when the main model fails. The simplest version needs no setup at all: paste the agent's output into Claude and ask it to check facts, numbers and tone.
Where It RunsOracle Cloud's free server, and its fine print
Oracle's free-tier Arm allowance is 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours a month, which Oracle says equals 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory, usable as one VM or two. You also get up to two small AMD VMs with 1/8 of an OCPU and 1 GB of memory each.
Two rules matter. Oracle may reclaim a free-tier instance it deems idle: over 7 days, CPU, network and (on Arm) memory use all under 20%. And Oracle may treat an account left idle for 30 days or more as abandoned.
Talking To ItYour agent on your phone
Nous Research doesn't list a native iPhone or Android app. You reach the agent from your phone through a chat app instead: Hermes Agent connects to Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email and more, so it answers like any other contact.
On a computer, use the terminal, the browser, or the desktop app for macOS and Windows.
Keep This Off ItWhat never goes to a low-cost agent
DeepSeek's privacy policy states that it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China. That alone is a reason to keep anything sensitive away from it.
Never send client, customer or company-confidential data to this setup, whichever model you pick, unless your employer has approved that model. Use it for personal projects and drafts you'd be comfortable showing a stranger.
The MathWhere about US$10 a month comes from
With a flat plan the math is simple: Hermes Agent and Oracle's free-tier server cost US$0, so OpenCode's US$10 Go plan is the whole bill.
With DeepSeek's API you pay per token instead, and the bill depends on how much the agent does. Off-peak prices are half of peak: DeepSeek's peak hours are 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC, Monday through Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run my own AI agent for about US$10 a month?
Yes. Nous Research's Hermes Agent is free, Oracle Cloud's free tier gives you a server for US$0, and the model is the only bill: OpenCode's Go plan is US$10 a month, or DeepSeek's API charges by the token. The US$10 total is our estimate, not a price any vendor quotes.
What does it cost to run Hermes Agent?
The agent itself is free and open source under the MIT license. You pay for the model it uses and, if you don't use a free server, for hosting. On Oracle Cloud's free tier the hosting is free.
Can I run an AI agent on Oracle Cloud's free tier?
Yes. Oracle's free tier includes Arm compute equal to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory, 200 GB of block storage and 10 TB of outbound data a month. Oracle may reclaim an instance it deems idle over 7 days, and sign-up asks for a card to verify you.
Which low-cost model can Hermes Agent use?
Nous Research's docs say Hermes Agent works with any OpenAI-compatible API, with DeepSeek built in as a provider. DeepSeek's deepseek-flash costs US$0.30 per 1M input tokens at peak and US$0.15 off-peak. OpenCode says its US$10 a month Go plan has been validated with Hermes.
Can I talk to my AI agent from my phone?
Yes, through a chat app. Nous Research doesn't list a native iPhone or Android app, but Hermes Agent connects to Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal and others, so you message it like any contact.
Is DeepSeek safe for work data?
Ask your employer first. DeepSeek's privacy policy says personal data is collected, processed and stored in the People's Republic of China. Never send client, customer or company-confidential data to it unless your employer has approved that.
How do I check what a cheap AI agent writes?
Use a stronger model as the checker. Paste the agent's output into Anthropic's Claude and ask it to check facts, numbers and tone, or set Hermes Agent to use a stronger model for the subagents it delegates to. Check anything before you use it or send it.
What are the limits of Oracle Cloud's free tier?
Oracle lists 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours of Arm compute a month (2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory), up to two small AMD VMs, 200 GB of block storage and 10 TB of outbound data a month. Idle instances and accounts idle for 30 days or more can be reclaimed.
Let the cheap model work. Check everything that matters.
