Plain-English Explainer

What Is the Mythos Class?

The capability class behind Fable, and why some versions are restricted.

Anthropic uses the term Mythos-class for its most capable models, the ones that sit above the Opus class. The name first appeared publicly in April 2026 with Claude Mythos Preview, and it reached general use in June 2026 with Fable 5. This page explains what Mythos means, how Fable and the Mythos-named models relate, and who can use which one.

Mythos-class is Anthropic's term for models that sit above its Opus class in capability. The first, Claude Mythos Preview, was released in April 2026 only to Project Glasswing partners for defensive cybersecurity work. Fable 5 (June 9, 2026) was the first Mythos-class model made safe for general use, and Fable 5.1 (September 1, 2026) is the current one. Claude Mythos 5 and Mythos 5.1 are the same models as Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 with some safeguards lifted, offered only to verified organizations.

The Key Concepts

Mythos vs. the models you already know

Mythos describes a capability level, and Anthropic ships Mythos-class models under two names depending on how much the safeguards are relaxed.

Mythos is a capability class

Anthropic describes Mythos-class models as sitting above its Opus class in capability. It is a level of capability, not a separate product family outside Claude.

Fable is the general-use name

Fable 5 was the first Mythos-class model Anthropic made safe for general use, and Fable 5.1 is its successor. Both are open to all customers, with safeguards that redirect some sensitive requests to Opus models.

Mythos models lift some safeguards

Claude Mythos 5 and Mythos 5.1 are the same underlying models as Fable 5 and Fable 5.1, with some safeguards lifted. They are offered only to organizations verified through Anthropic's programs.

Mythos Preview came first

Claude Mythos Preview, the first Mythos-class model, was released in April 2026 through Project Glasswing, a defensive cybersecurity effort with partner organizations. Anthropic has said it does not plan to make it generally available.

How It Works

From Mythos Preview to Fable 5.1

Anthropic announced Project Glasswing on April 7, 2026, bringing together technology and security organizations to help secure critical software. Claude Mythos Preview, described as an unreleased general-purpose frontier model, was offered to those partners for defensive cybersecurity work. It was the first Mythos-class model, and Anthropic said it does not plan to make it generally available.

On June 9, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5, which it called a Mythos-class model made safe for general use. Alongside it came Claude Mythos 5, the same underlying model with safeguards lifted in some areas, deployed first through Project Glasswing. To make Fable 5 safe for everyone, Anthropic launched it with safeguards that send some cybersecurity, most biology and chemistry, and flagged distillation requests to Claude Opus 4.8 instead.

On September 1, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, which it describes as the same model with different levels of safeguards. Fable 5.1 is available to all customers. Mythos 5.1 is offered only to organizations verified through Anthropic's verification programs, such as the Cyber Verification Program, and a life sciences program for professional researchers. What It Means for Users

Why the Mythos name matters when you use Fable

Knowing that Fable is a Mythos-class model helps you calibrate what it is for. Anthropic calls Fable 5.1 its most capable model open to all customers and suggests it for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work. For most other workloads, Anthropic's docs suggest starting with Claude Opus 5.5, which is faster.

It also explains why Fable sometimes answers through a different model. The safeguards that make Fable safe for general use redirect certain requests, such as some dual-use cybersecurity tasks and life sciences research questions, to Anthropic's Opus models. Anthropic reported that at Fable 5's launch these safeguards triggered, on average, in less than 5% of sessions.

For most practical tasks, such as writing, coding, analysis, and reasoning, the difference between Fable and its Mythos counterpart is invisible. It matters for specialized security and research work, which is exactly where Anthropic offers verified access to the Mythos-named versions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mythos class?

Mythos-class is Anthropic's term for models that sit above its Opus class in capability. The first was Claude Mythos Preview, released in April 2026 to Project Glasswing partners. Fable 5 was the first Mythos-class model made safe for general use, and Fable 5.1 is the current one.

Is Fable 5 the same as Claude Mythos 5?

They are the same underlying model. Anthropic describes Claude Mythos 5 as the same model as Fable 5 with safeguards lifted in some areas, and Mythos 5.1 and Fable 5.1 as the same model with different levels of safeguards. Fable is open to all customers; the Mythos versions are restricted.

Can I access Mythos models directly?

Only with verified access. Claude Mythos 5.1 is offered only to organizations verified through Anthropic's verification programs, such as the Cyber Verification Program. Claude Mythos Preview remains limited to Project Glasswing participants. Anyone can use the general-use Mythos-class model, Claude Fable 5.1.

Why are the Mythos versions restricted?

Anthropic has said that without safeguards, capabilities at this level in areas like cybersecurity could be misused to cause serious damage. So it ships a general-use version, Fable, with safeguards, and offers the versions with relaxed safeguards only to verified organizations doing work such as defensive security.

What safeguards does Fable add compared with Mythos?

At Fable 5's launch, Anthropic said requests on some cybersecurity topics, most biology and chemistry requests, and requests flagged as distillation attempts receive a response from Claude Opus 4.8 instead. For Fable 5.1, Anthropic says life sciences research questions and several kinds of dual-use cybersecurity tasks are still directed to its Opus models.

Is Claude Mythos Preview available to the public?

No. Anthropic describes Claude Mythos Preview as an unreleased frontier model offered through Project Glasswing, and it has said it does not plan to make Mythos Preview generally available. Anthropic's model deprecations page also lists Mythos Preview as deprecated as of June 9, 2026.

What is Fable 5?

Fable 5 is an Anthropic model released on June 9, 2026, described as a Mythos-class model made safe for general use. Its successor, Claude Fable 5.1, was released on September 1, 2026 and is Anthropic's most capable model open to all customers. Fable 5 remains available as a legacy model.

How is the Mythos class different from the Claude model family?

Mythos-class models are part of the Claude family. Anthropic's current general-use lineup is Claude Haiku 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5.5, and Fable 5.1, with Fable as the Mythos-class model. The Mythos name is used for the versions with some safeguards lifted, such as Claude Mythos 5.1, which are offered only to verified organizations.

Ready to put Fable to work?

The best way to understand a model is to use it on something real.
