Claude's Strengths & Limits

What Claude is genuinely great at vs ChatGPT and other AI tools, where it struggles, and how to work around the gaps.

Ask Claude to generate an image: it can't. Ask it to find hidden costs across three 30-page vendor proposals: it's in a different league. Knowing where Claude excels separates power users from the perpetually disappointed.

Where Claude excels:

Deep analysis across long documents. Finding the clause on page 42 that contradicts the executive summary is trivial for Claude.

Nuanced writing that holds your voice. Most tools drift by paragraph 3. Claude holds your constraints to the end.

Multi-constraint instructions. Twelve simultaneous requirements on tone, format, length, and content, all tracked.

Honest feedback. Claude will tell you your idea has a serious flaw instead of polishing it. This is its most underused capability.

Side by side on the same prompt, "Review my business plan and tell me what's wrong with it":

Generic AI: "Great plan! A few suggestions to make it even stronger..." Mild improvements, no real critique.

Claude: "The revenue projections assume 15% month-over-month growth for 18 months, which is unusually aggressive for a B2B SaaS with a 90-day sales cycle. What happens to runway if growth is 8% instead?"

On "Summarize this 50-page report," a small-context AI loses coherence by page 35. Claude reads all 50 pages and flags where the executive summary overstates a metric by about 30%.

The pattern: Claude wins when the task requires holding many things in memory and staying honest under pressure to please.

Where Claude struggles, and what to do instead:

No image or video generation. Claude writes excellent Midjourney or DALL-E prompts and critiques visual work, but it cannot create images.

No real-time data. Claude's training has a cutoff date. For current prices or today's news, search first, then paste the results in for analysis.

Hallucination on obscure facts. On niche regulations, exact dates, or biographical details, Claude can sound confident while being wrong. Verify names, dates, citations, and statistics when accuracy matters.

Heavy computation. For financial models and large datasets, use a spreadsheet. Claude interprets numbers; it shouldn't compute 10,000 rows.

The best Claude users know when NOT to use Claude.

Each limitation has a workaround:

Real-time data: search, then paste: "Given this data: [paste], answer this question: [question]."

Fact verification: "After answering, tell me how confident you are and what I should verify." You get an answer plus a verification agenda.

Images: have Claude write the generation prompt. It understands composition, lighting, and style descriptors better than most people writing prompts by hand.

Computation: do the math in your spreadsheet, then paste the output: "Here are the results of my financial model. What story does this tell and what's missing?"

Build hybrid workflows: specialist tools for specialized tasks, Claude for the reasoning on top.

Claude's superpowers: deep analysis across long documents, writing that holds complex constraints, and honest feedback. Its limits: no image generation, no real-time data, obscure facts need verification, and heavy computation belongs in a spreadsheet. Route each task to the right tool and use Claude for the analysis on top. Next: turning casual use into repeatable workflows.
