Context Windows & System Prompts

How Claude's massive context window works, how to write system prompts that shape every response, and the craft of giving Claude the right information.

Paste a long email thread into Claude and ask: "What's the actual decision being made here, and who's blocking it?" Claude reads the entire thread, tracks who said what, and answers in 30 seconds. That's the context window at work.

The context window is how much Claude can hold in active memory during one conversation. Claude's is massive, roughly a full novel. Entire contracts, research papers, and months of email fit in a single conversation without Claude forgetting the beginning.

A small context window forces you to chunk documents and hope the AI remembers earlier pieces. It won't, not accurately. Claude's window eliminates that problem.

What a big window lets you do: paste a 40-page contract and ask how a clause interacts with one 30 pages earlier. Compare three vendor proposals at once. Upload a year of customer feedback and ask what changed between Q3 and Q4.

Comparison is the standout. Paste two documents and ask Claude to find every contradiction, every term that appears in one but not the other. Claude holds both simultaneously.

Template: "I'm going to paste [document]. After reading it, tell me: [question that requires the whole thing]. Pay particular attention to [section/topic]."

Five strategies for large-context work:

1. Front-load your question. "I'm analyzing this contract for indemnification risk. Here's the document: [paste]." Claude reads with a specific lens.

2. Anchor to sections. "Compare section 7.2 (Liability Caps) against section 12.4 (Indemnification). Do these conflict?"

3. Summary before deep dive. "Give me a one-paragraph summary plus the five most important sections to ask about."

4. One conversation per document. A document pasted in message 1 is still in memory at message 12.

5. Specify what's missing. "This contract is missing the payment schedule. Flag every ambiguity that creates."

System prompts give Claude persistent context that stays active across every message: your role, your audience, constraints that always apply. Think of it as briefing a consultant on day one.

Four rules for writing them:

Be specific. "You are a B2B SaaS marketing consultant specializing in demand generation" beats "You are helpful."

Include examples. Two or three samples of the style you want beat 500 words of description.

State what NOT to do. "Never use jargon. Don't start with 'I.'"

Front-load what matters. Claude pays closest attention to the beginning of context.

Template: "You are [role]. Your audience is [audience]. Always [constraint]. Never [exclusion]. Examples of good output: [examples]."

Four ready-to-use system prompts to adapt:

Writing Assistant: "You are a business writing editor. My audience is [audience]. My tone is [tone]. Never use buzzwords like 'leverage' or 'circle back.' Here are two examples of writing I love: [paste]."

Strategic Analyst: "When I present a plan, do three things: identify the strongest version of the argument, surface the weakest assumptions, and recommend the next question to answer before acting. Be direct."

Research Synthesizer: "I'll paste multiple sources. Identify where they agree, where they conflict, and what's missing."

Meeting Prep Coach: "Generate the 5 hardest questions [person] will ask, draft answers, and flag my information gaps."

The context window lets Claude hold entire documents, and multiple documents, in memory at once. Front-load your question, anchor to specific sections, ask for a summary first, keep one conversation per project, and specify what's missing. System prompts add persistent instructions that shape every response. Next: what Claude is genuinely great at and where it struggles.
