Anthropic Invites Your Hardest Questions About AI

On July 9, 2026, Anthropic launched its Hard Questions initiative, publicly committing to collect and respond to the toughest questions people have about AI. After this lesson, you can use Claude to sharpen your own thinking on hard AI questions—and craft one worth submitting.

Anthropic is publicly asking for your hardest questions about AI—and committing to answer them. On July 9, 2026, Anthropic launched its Hard Questions initiative. Anyone can submit questions about AI's effects on jobs, families, creativity, scientific progress, and society. Anthropic will publicly track and report specific actions taken in response. This is accountability in writing, not a PR gesture.

This initiative follows real research. Anthropic surveyed 52,000 Americans through the Anthropic Public Record. It reached 81,000 Claude users across 159 countries and 70 languages via Anthropic Interviewer. Concerns they heard: job loss, devalued creative work, reduced human agency, AI capabilities falling into the wrong hands. Hopes: less laborious work, faster scientific progress, better medicine, new prosperity. Both sides are on the table.

The Hard Questions initiative is a window into how Claude handles complexity. Claude is designed to engage with difficult, contested topics—not avoid them or offer hollow reassurance. That makes it a useful thinking partner when you're forming your own view on something as consequential as AI's role in society. The key is prompting it to examine a question, not validate a pre-formed answer.

The most useful questions are specific and answerable. "Is AI dangerous?" is too broad. "How does Anthropic measure whether Claude affects people's ability to think independently?" names an actor, a mechanism, and a measure. That specificity is what makes both Claude and Anthropic useful to engage with. Vague questions get vague responses—from AI and from institutions.

What you can do now: Use Claude to explore a hard AI question from multiple angles before you land on a view. Bring your specific concern, ask for evidence on both sides, and tell Claude where you want uncertainty flagged. If you arrive at a question worth submitting, Anthropic's Hard Questions initiative is the place to send it—and they've publicly committed to tracking their response.
