10,000 Free Claude Seats for Scientists — Aug 27, 2026

Anthropic is opening 10,000 Claude subscriptions for scientists worldwide: standard seats free, premium seats (5× usage limits) at $15/month for one year. The AI for Science credit program also expands beyond biology to fund any compute-heavy research, with up to $50,000 in credits per project.

Scientists can now access Claude for free. On August 27, 2026, Anthropic opened 10,000 seats through a new Claude team plan for scientists. Standard seats are free. Premium seats — which include 5× higher usage limits — cost $15 per month. Both tiers run for one year. Anthropic intends to expand well beyond the initial 10,000 seats in the coming months.

Who qualifies and how to join. A principal investigator (PI) or equivalent at an academic or nonprofit research institution must complete a verification form. Once the PI is verified, they add the researchers in their lab to the plan. Individual lab members cannot apply on their own — the PI registers first.

Need more than a subscription covers? There are credits too. The AI for Science program provides free API credits for high-impact research — up to $50,000 per project. Any researcher is eligible to apply, regardless of role or institution type. Previously this program focused mainly on biological sciences. It now covers other fields, including compute-heavy work like the research on the Riemann zeta function and Claude's protein design work.

A third option: Claude Science. Launched in June 2026, Claude Science is a dedicated research product. It integrates the tools researchers use most, produces auditable artifacts (outputs you can trace back step by step), and provides flexible access to computing resources. It sits alongside subscriptions and API credits as a third path for researchers.

Model access depends on your field. Researchers in biology and chemistry are currently limited to Opus-class models. Claude Fable models block professional biology and drug development queries because of dual-use risks — the possibility that detailed scientific knowledge could be misused to cause harm. Anthropic is working with the US government on a separate access program for life sciences professionals to use Mythos-class models. The first participants in that program have been enrolled; broader access is not yet available.

What to remember. Anthropic opened 10,000 scientist seats on August 27, 2026 — free standard or $15/month premium (5× limits). A PI at an academic or nonprofit institution applies first, then adds lab members. The AI for Science credit program now covers all scientific fields, with up to $50,000 per project and no PI requirement. Biology and chemistry researchers access Opus-class models only; Fable blocks dual-use biology queries. Claude Science (launched June 2026) is a separate product with research-specific tooling and auditable outputs. Subscriptions, credits, and Claude Science can be combined.
