GSA deal cuts Claude 40% for every level of US government

Anthropic and the GSA just cut pricing on Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government, and the Claude API by 40% for every US government level — federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial — with no minimum spend required. The same prompting move behind the government's biggest wins (give Claude the full scope, name the target, ask it to flag what it's unsure about) works just as well on your own backlog.

Anthropic and the US General Services Administration (GSA) just expanded their deal. Government agencies now get a 40% discount on Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government, and the Claude API — for the first time, that discount applies whether an agency buys directly from Anthropic today or, in the coming months, through a cloud provider.

The discount also extends to state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) governments, and there's no minimum spend commitment — agencies pay only for what they actually use. Anthropic estimates the combined discounts will save the government $1 billion.

About 500 US federal, state, and local government organizations now use Claude. Weekly active users on Claude for Government are up roughly eightfold since February, and usage across federal civilian agencies has grown about twentyfold in a year.

The pattern behind those numbers is consistent: agencies hand Claude a messy, well-defined backlog and ask for a structured result, not a vague favor. Utah gave Claude Code to 34 developers across 10 state agencies — 80% had a working setup within 30 minutes, and 71% reported saving 20+ hours by the end of a four-week pilot. A state IT developer moved nearly 900 API methods to a new framework in two days on a project that had been scoped for a month. A state IT director used Claude to document 12 legacy code repositories, mapping 467 database tables and flagging 27 risks along the way.

That's the move worth copying: give Claude the full scope of what exists, name the target, and ask it to flag anything risky or uncertain instead of guessing through it.

This isn't limited to low-stakes work. Claude for Government — which reached FedRAMP High authorization and went generally available on September 30 — is built for agencies' most sensitive unclassified work. A federal security team used Claude Mythos to find and patch, in about two days, a vulnerability that a human penetration test had missed the month before. A state CIO said Claude cut their ransomware incident response from the usual 2-3 days down to 8 minutes.

Agencies building their own tools can also reach Claude through Amazon Bedrock (FedRAMP High, with select models cleared for DoD IL4/IL5 workloads in AWS GovCloud) or Google Cloud's Vertex AI (FedRAMP High). Claude Enterprise is now in process for FedRAMP Moderate authorization through the FedRAMP 20x program.

What to take away: Claude now costs 40% less for every level of US government, and usage is up 8-20x in the past year because agencies are pointing it at real, overdue backlogs — legacy documentation, migrations, incident response — not just chat. The prompting move that makes those wins repeatable is the same one you can use today: hand Claude the full scope, name the target output, and ask it to flag what it's unsure about.
