Record a Skill in Cowork: Teach Claude by Doing It Once

As of July 21, 2026, Claude Cowork lets Pro, Max, and Team users build reusable skills by screen-recording a workflow once. Claude analyzes the recording and generates a skill definition — no prompt writing required. This lesson shows you when to use it and how to use it safely.

As of July 21, 2026, Claude Cowork ships Record a Skill for Pro, Max, and Team users (phased rollout). Screen-record yourself completing a workflow once, and Claude generates a reusable, rerunnable skill — no prompt writing required.

You do the task. Claude watches. It builds the skill.

Open Cowork's shared workspace, start a recording, then complete your workflow normally — clicking, navigating between apps, filling fields. Claude analyzes the sequence and generates a skill definition that can execute the workflow on demand.

Claude does not replay your literal mouse clicks. It extracts the semantic intent of each step. That makes skills resilient to minor UI changes. Where possible, Claude suggests API-based connectors instead of raw UI automation.

An Anthropic engineer described the tolerance for imperfect recordings: "you'd be amazed how dumb you can be while navigating" and still get a coherent skill.

Recorded skills are saved in Cowork's persistent server-side workspace and can be rerun many times. Early reported use cases include trading alerts, LinkedIn outreach tasks, email replies, and expense report filing.

Record a Skill works with browser and computer-use interactions. It is best suited for multi-step workflows that are tedious to describe in words — especially when the workflow spans multiple apps or depends on a precise navigation sequence.

Privacy: The recording captures everything visible on your screen. Do not record workflows that show credentials, unmasked financial data, or regulated personal information. Anthropic had not published retention or model-training policies for recordings as of the July 21, 2026 launch.

If a workflow requires sensitive data partway through, handle that step before starting the recording — or mask it before the screen-recording begins.

Record a Skill (shipped July 21, 2026, Pro/Max/Team) lets you teach Claude a repeatable workflow by recording it once. Claude extracts semantic intent — not click coordinates — making skills resilient to UI changes. Skills live in Cowork's shared workspace and can be rerun on demand. Do not record credentials, financial data, or regulated personal information on screen, and review any skill for sensitive data before sharing it with your team.
