Ask Claude About the Anthropic Economic Index

The Anthropic Economic Index connector (launched July 22, 2026) lets you ask Claude data-backed questions about how AI is being used across occupations and industries. Enable it in about one minute and explore with plain-language questions.

You can now ask Claude data-backed questions about AI and work — no spreadsheets, no research background required. The Anthropic Economic Index connector, launched July 22, 2026, connects Claude directly to the Index, which measures how AI is actually being used in the economy.

Before this connector, the Index data was mainly accessible to researchers and journalists who knew to look for it. Now anyone can query it in plain English.

Setup takes about one minute. In claude.ai, open the connectors menu, find the Anthropic Economic Index in the directory, and enable it. The connector works in any conversation with any Claude model. There is nothing to install.

Once enabled, ask questions the way you'd ask a knowledgeable colleague. The release gives these examples: "Which occupations use AI the most?" — "What are the most common ways people in Colorado use Claude?" — "What sorts of tasks do teachers use Claude for?" — "How has task automation changed over the past year?"

Start broad, then drill down. Anthropic's recommendation: open with a wide question like "What does the Index say about my industry?" then narrow to specifics. Ask Claude to show you the underlying data behind any answer it gives you.

This sequence works because the Index contains multiple layers — which occupations use AI, which specific tasks they use it for, and how patterns have shifted over time. A broad opener surfaces the right layer to explore next.

One limitation matters. The Index reflects patterns in Claude usage, not the labor market as a whole. It tells you how people who use Claude use it — not how all workers in a field interact with AI. Claude will point this out when it's relevant to your question.

The full datasets remain freely available on Anthropic's website if you want to explore the raw numbers yourself.

What you can do now: Enable the Anthropic Economic Index connector in claude.ai in about one minute, then ask plain-language questions about AI use across occupations, tasks, regions, and time periods. Follow the broad-then-specific sequence, and always ask Claude to show the underlying data before citing any answer. Remember: the Index reflects Claude usage patterns, not the full labor market.
