Claude Co-work: Your Thinking Partner
When Claude sees your files, everything changes. Documents, spreadsheets, multi-file analysis, all without copy-paste.
You copy text out of a PDF, paste it into Claude, and watch the formatting collapse. Co-work fixes that. Claude on the desktop sees your actual files: documents, spreadsheets, contracts, meeting notes. No uploading, no copy-paste.
Chat works with ideas. Desktop works with files.
Pasting into the browser costs you three things: formatting, the connection to the rest of the file, and everything you did not think to paste. The desktop app reads the original document, references other files in the folder, and works with the actual data.
What the desktop app changes:
Documents. Point Claude at a 40-page contract and ask for a risk analysis. It reads the whole thing in seconds, then drafts a one-page memo and saves it to your Desktop.
Spreadsheets. Claude reads your data, adds formulas, builds summary sheets, and cleans messy entries. Ask it to flag issues first, then approve fixes one by one.
Multi-file work. Point Claude at a folder: extract renewal dates from 12 contracts, cross-reference plan against budget, synthesize action items from three meetings.
Template: "Go through every [file type] in [folder]. Extract [specific data points]. One row per file. Flag anything missing or unclear."
Five Co-work sessions worth running weekly:
Contract digest. "Extract every commitment on each side, every date, every penalty clause. Two-column comparison." A 40-page contract becomes a two-minute read.
Meeting prep synthesis. Across all prior notes: "What did I commit to and not deliver? What patterns should I address?"
Financial model review. "Identify every assumption. If one is wrong by 20%, what happens to the bottom line?"
Inbox zero sprint. "For each email: sender, what they need, deadline. Sort by urgency. Draft routine replies."
Document comparison. "Find every change between versions. Categorize: substantive, editorial, formatting." A 45-minute line-by-line review becomes 2 minutes.
The audit-first rule. Before Claude modifies data or documents, ask it to show what it found and what it plans to change. "Audit this spreadsheet for data quality issues" is safer than "clean up this spreadsheet."
"Clean up" invites unauthorized judgment calls. Claude might correct a $847,000 entry to $8,470 because it looks like a typo. What if it is not? With an audit, you review the list, decide the ambiguous cases, and approve specific fixes.
Apply it to spreadsheet cleanup, document reformatting, batch renaming, and any operation touching more than 10 items. The cost is two extra messages. Skipping it can cost hours of undoing.
The signal to move from Chat to Desktop is friction. If any of these happen regularly, switch:
Copying text out of documents into the browser
Uploading files one at a time
Losing formatting when pasting tables
Re-pasting context Claude already saw
Manually combining data from multiple files
Your files stay where they are. Claude comes to them.
The desktop app reads your files directly. No copy-paste, no formatting loss, no uploading. Start with the five sessions: contract digest, meeting prep synthesis, financial model review, inbox zero sprint, document comparison. Audit before changing data. When you catch yourself pasting files into the browser, that is your signal. Next: what Claude Code can build for you.
