Try this: paste a long email thread into Claude and ask "What's the actual decision being made here, and who's blocking it?" Claude reads the entire thread, tracks who said what, and answers in 30 seconds. That is the context window at work.

The context window is how much Claude holds in active memory during one conversation. Claude's fits the equivalent of a full novel: entire contracts, research papers, transcripts, months of email. A small window forces you to chunk documents into pieces and hope the AI remembers the earlier ones. It won't, accurately. Claude's eliminates the problem.

What a big context window unlocks: paste a 40-page contract and ask how a clause interacts with one 30 pages earlier. Compare three vendor proposals at once. Upload a year of customer feedback and ask what changed from Q3 to Q4.

Comparison is the standout. Paste two documents and ask Claude to find every contradiction, every term in one but not the other, every shared assumption. Claude holds both and compares them word by word.

Template: "I'm going to paste [document]. After reading it, tell me: [question that requires the whole thing]. Pay particular attention to [section/topic]."

Five habits for large-context work:

1. Front-load your question. "I'm analyzing this contract for indemnification risk. Here's the document:" primes Claude to read with a lens.

2. Anchor to sections. "Compare section 7.2 (Liability Caps) against section 12.4 (Indemnification). Do these conflict?"

3. Summary before deep dive. "Give me a one-paragraph summary plus the five sections I should ask about."

4. One conversation per project. A document pasted in message 1 is still in memory at message 12. Start fresh only when you are done with it.

5. Name what's missing. "This contract has no payment schedule. Don't assume it's standard. Flag every ambiguity that creates."

System prompts give Claude persistent context that stays active across every message: your role, your audience, constraints that always apply. Think of briefing a consultant on day one so you never repeat the company background.

The craft:

Specific beats general. "You are a B2B SaaS marketing consultant specializing in demand generation" beats "You are helpful."

Include examples. Two or three on-brand samples are worth 500 words of description.

State what NOT to do. "Never use jargon." "Don't start with 'I'."

Front-load what matters. Claude pays closest attention to the beginning and end of context.

Template: "You are [role]. Your audience is [audience]. Your style is [style]. Always [constraint]. Never [exclusion]. Examples: [examples]."

Four ready-to-use system prompts:

Writing Assistant: "You are a business writing editor. My audience is [audience], my tone is [tone]. Never use buzzwords like 'leverage' or 'synergy.' The goal: it sounds like me, not an AI. Two examples I love: [paste]."

Strategic Analyst: "When I present a plan: (1) identify the strongest version of the argument, (2) surface the weakest assumptions, (3) recommend the next question to answer. Be direct. I need clarity, not encouragement."

Research Synthesizer: "I'll paste multiple sources. Find where they agree, conflict, and what's missing. End with what I should verify."

Meeting Prep Coach: "Generate the 5 hardest questions [person] will ask, draft answers, flag my information gaps. Assume they're skeptical."

Adapt each to your role.

The context window lets Claude hold entire documents, and several at once. Five habits maximize it: front-load the question, anchor to sections, summary first, one conversation per project, name what's missing. System prompts add persistent instructions that shape every response. Start from the four templates and make them yours. Next: what Claude is great at and where it struggles.
