Picture a fast writer who has never met your manager. Hand them a clear brief and you get a usable first draft quickly. Hand them a vague one and you get something generic that you rewrite from scratch anyway.

Copilot in Word can draft, rewrite, and summarize documents. You can ask it for a first draft from a simple request, a detailed prompt, an outline, your notes, or reference files. The brief that works describes what you want, including topic, audience, tone, format, and length.

Once a draft exists, you edit it in pieces. Select text and ask Copilot to rewrite it, adjust the tone, make it more concise, or give you alternate versions. You can also ask it to expand the document with a new section, paragraph, checklist, or table.

Rewrites are where small errors creep in. When Copilot shortens a paragraph it rebuilds the sentences, and a date or a figure can shift along the way. Microsoft's own guidance is to review and verify details, especially facts, numbers, citations, and names, and it is clear that you are responsible for deciding whether to keep, revise, or remove the generated content before you share the document.

Where this falls short: Copilot does not know which of your numbers came from the finance team and which were a rough guess in your notes. It treats them all as text. Keep your original bullets open next to the draft, and read every figure and date against them before the document goes anywhere.

Give Word a brief with topic, audience, tone, format, and length. Tighten by selecting text and asking for the change you want. Then check every number and date against your own notes, because a rewrite can move them.
